Blackout Fabric

How can affix blackout fabric to my curtains?
I have bought some unlined curtains and 4m of blackout fabric. It smelt a little like it had been in the back of the shop too long so I put it in a cold gentle wash. I have a few questions now: Is it ok to iron the fabric?
It still has a sort of rubbery smell to it, is there anything I can do about this?
I’ve been thinking about attaching it to the back of curtains, if I sew, I’m sure light will come through the holds from the needle, will some iron-on hemming tape hold it well enough?
I have black out curtains. I put an additional curtain rod up and they hang behind my sheers. I have three curtain rods on the same window. The first one is decorative, it holds the pretty curtain. Then there is the one that holds the sheers, then the one that holds the blackout curtain. I never iron my blackout curtain.
