Cafe Curtain

How can a man pick curtains?

Huh, I’m trying to pick out curtains or drapes for my bedroom in my new house, something which *should* be done by a woman, for sure. I love the way the sun plays on curtains with eyelets and really love the look of macrame lace curtains. I’d like to make a “cafe curtain”, with an upper section and a lower section. Thinking to mix patterns, with ‘alliance’ http://www.authentic-macrame.com/cafe-curtains/alliance.htm above and ‘feuilles’ http://www.authentic-macrame.com/curtains/feuilles.htm below. My questions: 1. Is this too gay? (i.e., not very masculine) 2. Is this okay for a bedroom? (i.e., not totally for kitchen) 3. Will this work, to mix patterns? Or would I be better off going with the same pattern top and bottom?

It’s your house, you can choose what you like.

However, as with clothes, the curtains reinforce an image. To pick extremes as examples, a white shirts, tie and navy blue suit presents one image, white tee shirt, dungarees, wide brimmed hat present another image no matter who is wearing the clothes.

The same thing is true of your decorating choices.

Cafe curtains, for example, suggest a cottage. Cafe curtains are fine for kitchen and bedroom if you want to create a country cottage impression. The macrame adds another element, that of crocheted curtains which presents an additional country cottage confirmation.

These images are rooted in people’s minds, a “given” which you recognize and have addressed in your first question.

Your choice of patterns is also a personal choice. It’s more conventional to keep the same pattern top and bottom, but the other will work and be interesting.

The contingent aspect of this curtain choice is twofold: the other rooms of the house and the style of furniture. Is it going to be a hodgepodge like in a second hand collectible shop?

That’s ok if that’s what you like.

Or is it going to be a cottage theme throughout, with cafe style curtains and cottage style furnishings?
