Describe how Jimi Hendrix style changed from Are You Experienced to Band of Gypsies?

Compare and contrast the styles of the following albums:

Are You Experienced? (1967)
Axis: Bold As Love (1968)
Electric Ladyland (1968)
Band of Gypsies (1970)

This reminds me exactly of something I’d have to write for an English essay back in school! Hahaha

I think showing the development from Are You Experienced? to Axis: Bold As Love is difficult, because at times, I could swear that Axis came first, and Are You Experienced? was a follow up – more developed, arguably a little more complex. One thing that stands out about Are You Experienced? is that a lot of the album could be considered a ‘radio friendly hit album’, all the songs are pretty short, and marketable, such as Foxy Lady, Can You See Me, Fire. Although, many of my favourite Hendrix songs are on it. AND – It shows a lot of variety, from Red House, to Are You Experienced, etc.

Then with Axis, I think it follows more of a pattern, and you’re able to make more of a connection between the songs [does that make sense?]. But! At the same time you could argue, and call it a tad more ‘progressive’, introducing the non-song of EXP. And there are more soulful slow songs, like Little Wing, Castles Made Of Sand. Also, in She’s So Fine, Wait Until Tomorrow, etc, you more of the rest of the band involved [in the singing particularly]. I know that this album was partially a result of pressure from record producers and that does indeed show.

Electric Ladyland (to me) is a big mash up of all Hendrix’s different styles, and you see some more developments in style, not seen on the previous two – like in Burning Of The Midnight Lamp [one of my favourite of his ever!], and one could argue a lot of the songs on it are a lot more polished.

Band Of Gypsies – Whereas I do love this album, I kind of miss the edge and spark of the Experience. They were a magical trio weren’t they? It’s just missing a little something, which I can’t put my finger on..

I know I didn’t give a great answer, but it’s kind of difficult to track the development for some reason – Hendrix never sticks to one style, which is part of the charm of his music, but it also makes it harder to describe. Hahaha
