Which country is leading the Olympic medal count per capita?

The US is crushing China in the per capita medal count, but are there other countries that are beating the US? It’s an interesting measure because it levels the playing field. Of course a country with 2 billion citizens is going to beat a country with 200,000 based on sheer genetic advantage with so many to choose from.

A researched answer:

Athens Olympics Total Medals per head of population: 1) Bahamas 2) Australia 3) Cuba 4) Estonia 5) Slovenia 6) Jamaica 7) Latvia Hungary 9) Bulgaria 10) Belarus 26) Russia 29) Germany 30) Italy 31) France 33) UK 39) USA 70) China

Gold medals per head of Population similar but inclusions into the top 10 are Norway (2) and New Zealand (7), Greece, Sweden & Georgia (8, 9, & 10).

Make your own decision as to whether the Bahamas can claim top spot with just 1 gold and 1 bronze. Population 308000.

Maybe a qualification of 10 medals would round things out, which, without yet to finish the Beijing tally properly, (so don’t quote me) the top countries would be 1) Jamaica 2) Australia 3) Belarus 4) Cuba 5) Hungary. New Zealand will take 3rd spot if they get one more medal. Great Britain will move up inside the top 20 for many, many years and USA and China will be in the 30′s. Australia, btw, has a population of 20 million, not 30.

Cuba has long been the ‘traditional’ power per capita, but has fallen since the break-up of Soviet Russia. The same fate was suffered by the Romanian rugby team, but that’s a different story. Australia has risen to take their place but is now in decline due to the loss of all its coaches to the UK.

Jamaica is now the undisputed leader.

Unfortunately, all their medals come from the one discipline. So if you want a list per capita with at least 10 medals spread over at least five events, it would look something like this:

1) Australia 2) Cuba 3) Belarus 4) Kazakhstan 5) Netherlands 6) Canada. Hungary and New Zealand will move in if they get another medal (NZ) or two (Hungary) to reach the 10. Norway need 3 more.

If the medal tally is based on minimum government assistance, Zimbabwe would be in the lead.

The trend over the last two decades sees Sweden as the biggest faller and China and (now) the UK as the most improved.

On a less serious note, and one to incite controversy and my own credibility, I’d like to see countries rated on a ‘most marriageable’ status. After all, we’d all like our kids to come from good stock. The winners are the women’s Czeck handball team and the Dutch hockey outfit. That’s concentrated talent per capita if I’ve ever seen it.

On one further note, try to imagine coming through the tunnel into the stadium leading the marathon. Maybe we should all ditch the rest of the stats and give full honors to the country who provided that winner.
