Curtain Green

About a week ago a green beetle-like bug laid eggs on my curtain.?

the eggs hached this morning. Little bright green mini-beetles came out. I hung the curtain outside so the babies could escape, and was careful not to place them in direct sunlight. A few beetles have moved a bit, but most are still sitting on top of the eggs, and it has been hours. Also, the color is starting to become a dull yellow. Is something wrong, and where should i put them? I did not place them on a tree or bush as i did not want to disturb them too much.

Sounds like you’re doing a good job at trying to return them to the environment. They may be sticking around the eggs because they think it is a leaf they’re supposed to feed on. I would lay the curtain face down on a bush in the shade and let them move out on their own. Don’t be too discouraged if they don’t make it, insects broadcast eggs everywhere by the thousands to make sure just a few reach maturity to reproduce. If you are interested in identifying the insects you can collect one or two and bring it to a university insect extension office where they can ID it for you. It is hard to tell what you got there by description alone. If you say they look like tiny bugs it sounds as if you have a hemimetabolous insect. These dont have a pupal stage and start developing looking like an adult but without wings. A holometabolous insect is like a fly or butterfly that has an immature stage and completely metamorphs into an adult. Because they’re green and look like mini-bugs I would guess you have a true bug on your hands. These are in the order Hemiptera. They almost always have piercing sucking mouthparts. They feed on plants or other insects by piercing them and sucking out the juices. They also often have a think called a hemilytra. Beetles have elytra which are modified front wings into a thickened sceleritized shield. The second set of wings function for flight and the elytra protects the second pair. Hemilytra on the other hand arent usually as tough as the beetles 1st pair of wings (usually described as leathery) and the last 1/3 of the wing is membranous (You can see through it somewhat and you can usually see wing venation). Finally, the color change may be natural and you may not need to worry about it. If they shed there skin (molt into the consecutive instar) they will be bright white and very soft until the new exoskeleton hardens. Hope this helps.
