Curtain Window

How wide would I make a curtain, if my window is 34 in wide.?
are there any simple formulas for figuring this out. i have a valance made already, but that came with the house. (we just moved in) could i just use the width of each panel of the valance for the regular curtain?
btw i’ve done a lot of sewing, but i’ve never made curtains, so be really simple.
I’ve always double the width of the window, plus an inch on each side. Three inches at top for curtain rod, depending on the rod. Two inches for a hem. Hope this helps. You can also check pattern books at fabric stores. Roxanne
