Insulated Curtain

Any ideas on how to cover the interior opening to a mail slot?
The opening is 6″ x12″ and the slot is in the wall (not the door). During the winter the area near the mail slot is very cold so I am hopeful to find something that will both insulate the opening and provide some privacy. The previous home owners left us with a very ugly “curtain” and I’m looking for something different.
Take a piece of thin plywood that is slightly larger than the opening (Get a good quality ply so you can stain it) put a piano hinge on the wood attaching it to the wall. then go outside with a pen or pencil and draw around the edges of the opening onto the wood. Then take the wood back off. Inside the square that you drew, cut foam to fit the square. Then cover the square with a black upholstery type material. Staple the material on. Then stain and finish the side of the wood that faces into the house. The foam covered with material should fit into the square and insulate it.
