What is a ‘set associations’ control panel? ?

I’m trying to view an animation that was sent to my PC from another PC. it is an ‘spf’ file and i can’t view it on my computer. the pop up read’s ” this file does not have a program associated with it to preform this action. Please download an association from the set associations control panel”. I’ve tried everything i can think of but still no luck.

As far as I can see, the Set Associations Control Panel exists only in Windows Vista, not in XP. You can get to it this way:

1. Click Start->Control Panel.
2. In the right-hand pane, click Programs.
3. Under Default Programs, click Make A File Type Always Open In A Specific Program.

That will open the Set Associations page.

The problem I see with that is that .SWF files are Shock Wave Flash files, and I don’t know of a specific application for opening them. Browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, probably others) recognize the file type, but I don’t know what would open it as a standalone file.
