Why do flight attendants require passengers to raise the window shades during takeoff and landing?

What good could this possibly do?
Apparently some of you (e.g. Coral) don’t fly internationally. I fly in Asia a lot and every major carrier I’ve been on requires us to raise the window shades during takeoff and landing.

Statistically speaking, more crashes occur during take-off and landing, so it seems counter-intuitive to raise the shades. They would prefer the inmates on the plane to be in blissful ignorance. That’s why they have you breathe oxygen during sudden descent, to keep you calm so you don’t panic before you perish in a horrific fireball. Haven’t you seen Fight Club?
